Independence Day Caterpillar.

This gaudy guy showed up to the family's Fourth-of-July gathering in Holt Co., Mo.. I think he was under an elm, and he may have been as striking and colourful as all of the fireworks around!
Does anyone recognize him? I would love to know what butterfly-thing it will become!? Happy Fourth of July!

Great photo! I hadn't read your blog in a while so was catching up. That's a White-marked Tussock Moth caterpillar. I've reared them out before. I had a female adult moth - they're wingless - and she laid a bunch of eggs. Must have called in a male and mated on my porch somehow and I had a bunch of baby caterpillars that I turned loose. Pretty caterpillars!
